Panel: The Economic, Social & Cultural Case for Philanthropy in the Black Community
Research suggests the Canadian philanthropic sector has failed to support the urgent and specific needs of Black communities in Canada. A review of 40 leading Canadian foundations, whose assets total nearly $16 billion, revealed only 6 of these foundations funded Black-serving organizations and two foundations funded Black-led organizations between 2017 and 2018 (Report: Unfunded: Black Communities Overlooked by Canadian Philanthropy). This panel will explore what becomes possible when Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-focused non-profit, charitable and grassroots organizations have the sustained resources and infrastructure they need to make a meaningful difference.

Deep-Dive Track: Product Development
Starting a company is exhilarating. Unfortunately, the “build it and they will come” model doesn’t quite work out the way that it’s intended. It’s well known that marketing is essential for all businesses, but it's even more important for new ones. Unless people know about your organization and what it offers, they probably won't buy your products or services. As your business grows and expands its presence, it may attract customers through word of mouth. Until that happens, though, you should prioritize creating a strategy that helps you maximize your exposure with the limited resources that you have.

Deep-Dive Track: Product Development
"Focus on the user and all else will follow.” Building great products first requires getting a deep understanding of the people you are designing for and the challenges they face. Following a people-centered approach to design allows you to build empathy and find innovative and effective ways to meet the needs of your users. This session will introduce you to user experience and why it matters, and then will offer some useful tips for getting started with UX in your own organization.

Venture capitalists (VCs) are committed to funding the most innovative entrepreneurs, working closely with them to transform breakthrough ideas into emerging growth companies that drive job creation and economic growth. These VCs provide capital to start-up ventures that do not have access to equities markets and they accept the risk of the start-up firm but command a high return of their success. This Deep-Dive Track will shed light on the landscape of the VC industry while creating awareness around other options of financing (non-dilutive and dilutive) that are available to entrepreneurs thinking disruptively.

Overlooked Founders - Driving Change in Venture Capital for Racialized Founders
Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t lie. Venture capital is big business. A $134B industry to be exact. People of colour also hold the largest amount of purchasing power globally. However, only 3% of all venture capital funding in 2020 goes to people of colour; 0.67% to black founders.
According to Harvard Business Review, VCs are leaving more than $4 trillion on the table by not investing in diverse founders. This panel explores what opportunities exist for investors, and how to spot them and authentically support entrepreneurs from racialized backgrounds.

Keynote: For a Better World: Shaping Our Psychology By Where We Live
How do the environments we live in shape our psychology? What happens to our bodies and brains when we live in a city, and what happens to the bodies and brains of those who experience oppression? These questions will be explored by Dr. Robin Mazumder as he shares his story of how he came to be interested in how urban design impacts mental health and provides suggestions on ways we can build equitable cities that support well-being.
Panel: Inclusive Innovation: The Frontier of Collaboration & Creativity
The innovation ecosystem can generate substantially more economic and social benefits for Canada, but certain communities and places often inequitably capture these benefits. According to the Inclusive Innovation Monitor, certain critical factors are at play when it comes to building an innovation ecosystem welcoming to all.
An innovation economy is inclusive when there are opportunities for all people to participate, and when there is a fair distribution of the benefits and harms resulting from innovation. Growing evidence suggests that inclusive economies generate more and better innovation, higher growth, and more equitable distribution of the benefits of innovation.
This panel aims to explore how communities can better increase access to the innovation ecosystem and empower all future innovators and creators.

We exist to celebrate diversity and to help innovative and creative people achieve their dreams.
We are manifesting our vision between the blurred lines of the physical and metaphysical worlds. We’re a community of misfits who aren’t afraid to fail. We aren’t afraid to push boundaries. We aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo. The world 100 years ago looked completely different than it does today and that will be the case for the next 100. We’re building C-Tribe to be at the forefront of web3 culture and to do that requires a whole new set of rules.
Values:
Take care of our people – our community comes first. Always. We pride ourselves on operating in underserved communities and being a platform for underestimated people. By standing up for them, they show out for us. This is our superpower.
Collisions, culture, connections, commerce – the future of community lives at the intersection of these four things. C-Tribe is uniquely positioned to explore and build on this.
Inspire and innovate – By framing the way we want to change the world, we can experiment with new ideas and positively criticize the status quo. By developing inspiring things for our collective, anything is possible.
